Zuerst unterscheiden wir in zwei Merkmale, und das sind die Türprofile und die Funktionen. Die Profile definieren das Aussehen und wie gut diese zu einer Architektur oder Design passen. Natürlich können Profile auch zur Isolation oder zur Sicherheit beitragen. Bein einem Profil unterscheiden wir dann z.B. ob es eine Ganzglas oder Feingerahmte Lösung ist. Dabei kommt dann deutlich mehr Glas, oder im anderen Extrem, massive Metallprofile zum Einsatz. Die Funktionen einer Schiebetür definieren dann den Einsatzzweck. Wenn die Schiebetüren die Grenze des Gebäudes nach Aussen sind, dann wird häufig ein Einbruchschutz oder korrekt bezeichnet eine Einbruchhemmung vorausgesetzt. Ist eine Schiebentür im Innebereich eines Gebäudes im Einsatz, soll diese möglichst geräuschlos und zuverlässig funktionieren, damit Personenflüsse möglichst ohne zeitliche Verzögerung durch die Schiebetüren stattfinden können.
Schiebetüren laufen nach aktuellen Lösungen mit Rollen auf einer Schiene, wobei das Gewicht der Türenflügel hängend ist. Die Rollen Türflügel sind dabei auf der Schiene eingehängt, und die Rollen tragen damit das Hauptgewicht. Häufig kommt eine entsprechende Bodenführung dazu, damit die Türflügel in einer idealen Spur laufen, und so zu einen reibungslosen Öffnen und Schliessen beitragen. Die automatische Schiebetür verfügt über Motor, Steuerung, Netzteil, Antriebseinheit (Keilriemen). Der Motor, Antrieb und Steuerung bieten in Kombination zahlreiche Vorteile.

Ein Wartung oder ein Service hat primär das Ziel, die Lebensdauer ihrer Türanlage zu verlängern. So gibt es bestimmte Servicezyklen, oder in dem Sinne minimale Wartungsangebote, die auf vielen Jahren Erfahrung basieren. Je nach Hersteller wird also im Minimum von 1 bis 2 Services pro Jahr empfohlen. Wird Ihre Türanlage also jährlich gewartet, kann ihre Anlage von 20 bis zu 30 Jahren halten. Dabei gibt es natürlich bestimmte kostenarme Verschleissteile, die während dieser Zeitspanne ersetzt werden müssen. Es wird auch empfohlen, die Anlage nach 15 oder 20 Jahren zu modernisieren, um den ursprünglichen Investitionswert zu erhalten. Nach einer Moderinisierung kann die Anlage um weitere 20 Jahre betrieben werden.
Auf dem aktuellen Stand bieten die meisten Schiebetüren eine minimale Sicherheit (RC 1 N ), um das gewollte eindringen von Dritten in ein Gebäude zu verhindern. Wenn ein Einbrecher das notwendige Werkzeug mit bringt, braucht es korrekt bezeichnet einbruchhemmende Eigenschaften oder Funktionen bei einer Türe. Dazu wurden sogar verschiedene Stufen der Einbruchshemmung definiert. Diese sind nach dem englischen Begriff Resistance Class (Widerstandsklasse) von RC 1 bis RC 6 eingestuft. Legt man Wert auf einen solche Einbruchshemmung, sollte man darauf achten, dass die Lösung oder Türanalage eine entsprechende Zertifizierung für die entsprechende Stufe vorweisen kann.
